The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) is an attached agency to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) created through Presidential Decree No. 1003-A.

It has the mandate to recognize outstanding achievements in science and technology made by Filipino Scientists in all fields of science. It is also the country’s primary advisory body to the government and the science community on matters related to science and technology.

The Academy is mandated to:

  • Recognize outstanding achievements in science and technology as well as provide meaningful incentives to those engaged in scientific and technological Research (Presidential Decree 1003-A, s. 1976).
  • Engage in projects and programs designed to recognize outstanding achievements in science and to promote scientific productivity (Executive Order No. 818, s. 1982).
  • Advise the President and the Cabinet on matters related to Science and Technology (Executive Order No. 818, s. 1982).
  • Embark on programs traditionally and internationally expected of an academy of science (Executive Order No. 818, s. 1982).
  • Manage, operate, and maintain the Philippine Science Heritage Center, which serves as the main repository of the country’s contributions, achievements and accomplishments in science and technology (Republic Act 9107, 2000).
  • Provide the necessary technical and administrative support to the Scientific Career Council of the Scientific Career System (Executive Order No. 17, s. 2023).

The main functions of NAST PHL are divided into four components, namely:
Recognition, Advisory, Scientific Collaboration/Linkages, and Promotion.

Through its activities, NAST PHL has been able to bring science and technology closer to the lives of the Filipinos. Its series of information fora and discussions have encouraged public participation in open discussions of important and pressing issues in science and technology on a wide range of topics. NAST members (National Scientists, Academicians, and Corresponding Members) and other local and foreign experts have put their knowledge and expertise together to advise the legislators and other policy-making bodies of the government and non-government entities, on policies related to science and technology.
